Inside Atlas: Design the perfect bedroom for a good night’s sleep

October 28, 2016

We enjoyed a long and languid summer in London this year and fortunately, the holiday period extended well into September. But as the mercury drops and the night draws in, it’s starting to feel like winter. And waking up before the sun rises is a struggle we face once again.

According to The Sleep Council’s Great British Bedtime Report more than a quarter of Brits experience poor quality sleep on a regular basis, while those of us that do sleep soundly report feeling more positive, happy and productive. The space we sleep in has a significant impact on the quality of our sleep, so it’s well worth making some small changes to ensure we are getting those vital extra hours of rest!

So we’ve looked at how to design the perfect bedroom to help you drift peacefully off to sleep.

Keep cool and save the environment

Not only will turning down the central heating make you a green guru, it can also help prevent sleep disturbances. The ideal temperate for sleep is between 18 and 21 degrees. Introduce a little air flow by leaving a window ajar.

Symmetry to ease the mind

Centre your bed and create a harmonious symmetrical space by placing a bedside table at each side of the bed, adorned with matching lamps, framing the bed with artwork, and lining up your scatter cushions!

Bring nature inside

Be at one with nature. Natural materials, such as wood and stone, images of nature and a potted plant in the corner of the room, will add to your sense of calm. At The Atlas Building, bedrooms in the three-bed apartments benefit from a balcony, which offer residents the luxury of outdoor space and a chance to gaze out across the city. Further, all of the apartments are bathed in natural light, thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows.

A cluttered room creates a cluttered mind

Minimise mess and don’t overdo it with accessories. Less is more, as too much visual stimulation doesn’t inspire a restful mind. With, full-height, fitted wardrobes finished with real timber veneer and fitted with integrated lighting, we’ve allowed for plenty of storage at The Atlas Building, so residents can keep bedrooms clutter free.

Create warm, ambient lighting

Warm hues signal to our brains that it’s time for bed. Think ‘sunset’: avoid blue-toned lighting and opt for bulbs with warm yellow or gold light. Lamps that emit a downward light, such as those used in many of The Atlas Building’s bedrooms, create a soft effect. And controllable, energy-efficient lighting is used throughout The Atlas Building, so you can create just the right mood.

Choose cool colours for relaxation

Many of us think to decorate our bedrooms with warming golds and reds, to create a cosy nest. We couldn’t be more wrong. Warm colours encourage an increase in heart rate and blood pressure, while cool colours, such as blues, greens and greys promote relaxation, slow respiration, lower heart rate and blood pressure and, in turn, lead to better sleep. At The Atlas Building, we’ve painted one of the bedrooms in the show apartment twilight teal and incorporated stone greys and white, complemented with bright accent colours.

Follow these simple pieces of advice and you are sure to have sweet dreams.
